How to free up disk space on Windows 11 (safely)
A practical, safe order for freeing space on Windows 11: find what is big first, then clean temp files, the Recycle Bin, old downloads, duplicates and unused apps.
Most "free up space" advice starts by deleting things. That is backwards. The safest and fastest way is to first see what actually takes the space, then remove only what you understand.
1. See what is big
Open PCMap and pick your user folder, or install the desktop app to scan whole drives. You get a map of folders by size, the largest files, duplicates and files you have not opened in a long time. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is deleted.
2. Empty the easy places
- Recycle Bin – files you deleted still use space until it is emptied.
- Downloads – installers (.exe, .msi) and archives (.zip) you already used are usually safe to remove.
- Temporary files – Settings › System › Storage › Temporary files. The PCMap desktop app can also move temp files older than two days to the Recycle Bin.
3. Turn on Storage Sense
Settings › System › Storage › Storage Sense cleans temporary files and the Recycle Bin automatically on a schedule.
4. Remove duplicates and old large files
Videos, phone backups and disk images are often stored twice. PCMap lists copies with the same name and size, and the desktop app can verify that their content is identical before you remove one.
5. Uninstall programs and games you do not use
Settings › Apps › Installed apps, sorted by size. Games are often the biggest single items on a PC.
What not to delete
Do not manually delete C:\Windows, WinSxS, pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys, Program Files or System Volume Information. Windows manages them; deleting by hand can break updates or startup. See what WinSxS is and why drive C: fills up.
Free, in your browser, nothing uploaded or deleted.
